  BORA BORA OVERVIEW

This picture-perfect paradise offers the most beautiful lagoon of the entire archipelago, as well as adventures you will find nowhere else, like shark feeding! Since it is a volcanic island very near to Tahiti, the landscape is very similar, yet it is neither as populated or as touristy as Tahiti, so you can enjoy your little piece of paradise in comparative isolation.

Topography

The Society Islands are a volcanic archipelago located south of the Hawaiian Islands in the Pacific Ocean. Most islands contained in what is known as the Society Islands are volcanic, with sharp and sudden peaks dominating the midsection of the island. Bordering both the sea and land of the islands are lagoons that are sheltered from the sea by a coral reef. The beaches have white sand and are backed by dense tropical foliage, heavy with blossoms.

Climate

The Society Islands are blessed with a mild tropical climate and temperatures that rarely vary from 75° with low humidity. The trade winds are constantly cooling the islands, and the rainy season still sees more sun than rain.

Things to do and see on Bora Bora

Jeep Safari Adventure

Get to know exotic Bora Bora up close by taking a 3-hour, four-wheel-drive tour of the island's virgin interior. You'll climb the mountains and discover sacred sights of the Polynesian past, and then plunge into the depths of the jungle.

Helicopter Tour

Get views of Bora Bora that you will find no where else... from overhead! Circle over the multi-hued lagoon and take a peek at the peak of Mount Otemanu, a basalt obelisk that's impossible to scale, although it has been attempted numerous times.

Swim with Sharks

For a heckuvan adrenaline rush, grab a mask and a snorkel, and swim amid sharks. In the outer reef surrounding the island, you can watch as Tahitian divers hand-feed black-tip sharks around you!

Catamaran Cruise

Even if you have never set foot on a boat, these tip-resistant sailboats offer the best sailing experience around. You can charter a boat for an afternoon picnic at sea as well as an overnight fishing expedition.

Dining on Bora Bora

(and in the Society Islands in general)

The easy-going French Polynesians are at their dining happiest when surrounded by an abundance of fruits and seafood. Eating well is as much a part of the culture as the music and dance! The legendary breadfruit, the many exotic fruits and dozens of varieties of banana including the unique orange-skinned fei, the various starchy roots such as taro, tarua, and ufi are the basis of island cuisine. A "must-try" delicacy is the world-famous raw tuna marinated in coconut cream with limes. All these elements come together in the traditional ahima'a, the Tahitian earth oven where suckling pig, fafa chicken, and other delicacies like po'e, made of varieties of baked local fruit, are also prepared. The variety and abundance of fish, from perch to parrot fish that are caught and prepared on the spot make up the majority of the daily menu. The majority of dining choices for visitors are contained within the resorts, but there are some good local eateries sprinkled around the islands waiting to be discovered.

Nightlife on Bora Bora

Most of the nightlife activities in the Society Islands revolve around the resort hotels. Ask at the front desk for information on what is going on. The most popular activities include traditional Tahitian dances and plays, as well as beach parties.
